Lets Talk Urine and Cat Urine

I must start off by telling you that everything in this Blog is a suggestion and if it fails I cannot be held accountable for these suggestions failing to remove the stain. They work and I have tried them myself. Oh and I should add, no I was not paid for writing this blog at all. This is my free time spent on putting the word out there. Because simply I have no life.

If you are a parent or about to be one, Trust me get the WET/DRY Vac. You know them. Shop Vacuums. They are a life savor for spills of all kinds.

Urine Stain Out of Carpet: To get urine stains out of carpet, get out that Wet/Dry Vac if you have one the key here is to act quickly. Suck up as much of the moisture as possible. Then blot the area (not rubbing) with paper towels. Or Blot the area with the paper towels if you don't have the Wet/Dry Vac. I have a few suggesting mixes for you and plans so get to know these ones. Weather you have kids or pets or well a drunk spouse who pees in the corner at night you need these ideas. Good luck!
  • Making a solution of 1/4 teaspoon of liquid dish washing detergent in one cup of warm water. Please do not use laundry detergent, automatic dish washer detergent or any dish soap with lanolin, heavy dyes or bleach in it ( we don't want you to stain or bleach the carpet).
  • Spray or spread the mixture over the area that is affected.
  • For best results extract the moisture using a Wet/Dry Vac, or by blotting using plain white paper towels ( plain white so there is no dye transfer to the carpet.) or a white cotton cloth. Rinse the area with warm water and extract moisture. Repeat with solution again. Keep repeating these steps as long as there is improvement in the stain.
  • Our next solution to be applied is 2 tablespoons of ammonia in a cup of water. Rinse, extract and repeat. Blot the area and or use the Wet/Dry Vac.
  • Next we have the solution of one cup white vinegar in two cups of water.Rinse, extract and repeat. Blot the area and or use the Wet/Dry Vac.
  • Dry the carpet completely by putting a layer of white paper towels over the area and weight it down with something that will not stain if it gets wet. We do not want dye transfer to the carpet. Change the paper towel until the carpet is dry.
Urine is a hard stain sometimes to deal with. You cannot always get the urine stain out of the carpet. The smell will let you know if this is the case. Urine varies, throw out the day, the diet and age of both our pets and our selves. Cat urine with out a doubt is one of the worst for leaving a smell in your carpet. A Pet Store or your Vet may be able to help you here also with enzyme treatment that chemically breaks down the urine.

--Cat Urine Smell Removal--
Ingredients:
  • 2 tsp. of Baking Soda
  • 2 small drops of liquid dish washing soap. Remember to use ones with as little dye in it and scents.
  • 16 oz. (2 cups) of Hydrogen Peroxide. The Hydrogen Peroxide should be at least 3% strength. Most likely you will find this in a Pharmacy or where beauty products are sold in some cases.
  • Place all ingredients in a glass jar or bowl-Do not put it into an airtight container. These ingredients release Oxygen. Mean that the gases release need somewhere to go and the container could explode from the pressure or just pop the lid. It's all fun and games til someone looses an eye. So this is a warning, no closed containers.
  • This mixture is most effective and the ingredients are active within the first hour. Make sure you use the mixture within that time period. So yeah this means you really are just wasting time, money and effort if you pre-mix it up. Sorry.
Cat Urine Smell - Steps for Removal
  • Gently stir until all the Baking Soda has dissolved. do not shake or beat the mixture.
  • When the cat urine is fresh, be sure to blot up as make as possible any excess urine with paper towel (white please as we do not want color transfer from the paper towel).
  • Pour the mixture of our Cat Urine Small Remover over the urine spot, making sure to cover the entire area.
  • Allow the our Cat Urine Smell Removal mixture to completely soak the area where the cat urine is. Do not rub it in or scrub, you want it to soak in.
  • Here is the hard part-Leave it alone for 24 hrs.
  • Take clean white paper towels or a white wash cloth and blot up any remaining Cat Urine Smell Removal liquid. Remember blot do not scrub or rub.
  • Allow area to air dry completely where the cat odor was.
  • Repeat if need be. When it is really tough Cat Urine odor, numerous times. Carpet, furniture and mattresses typically need 1-2 treatments. Concrete, wood ( wood flooring this is an issue, I would ask your vet if they have anything or would a flooring expert has to say first before using ANY SOLUTION on it ), tile and the list goes on for hard surfaces often 3-5 treatments are needed. Once a day treatment til it's gone. Yes I am sorry about that very much a labor of love.
  • Once the area is dry vacuum as normal.
Concrete and generally hard surfaces, you want to make sure you make enough of the Cat Urine Smell Removal liquid to completely cover the stain. Pour the mixture over the stain and let it soak. Remember the ideal time to let it soak is 24 hrs and remember you want to get in on the stain with in the hour you mixed up the solution. Well depends on the humidity level too how long it will sit so do not get upset if in that 24hrs it has evaporated. You will most likely have to repeat this for 3-5 days before the stain, or more importantly smell is gone.

Cold hard reality maybe set in however. You can call in the Carpet Cleaning company with a truck mounted hot water extraction unit and it may get deeper and get the stain out. If this fails on your carpet and in some cases. you may need to replace the the carpet, the pad and even seal the floorboards to prevent the odor from coming back.

Pet Stains as a hole on carpet have different effects not only because of your pet but also depends greatly on the type of carpet you have. Take a Beige Carpet, blue dyes are attacked to pet urine, this can leave behind a a red and yellowish dye. The result is maybe a red, yellow or orange stain.

Not all hope is lost the color may sometimes be restored by treating the areas with the Solution of:
  • 2 tablespoons of ammonia
  • 1 cup of water
Pour onto the stain then extract as much moisture as possible, using your Wet/Dry Vac or by blotting using white paper towel or white cloth, the cloth use old ones as most likely you will just want to throw them away afterward. Reminder here do not use colored paper towels or cloth as we do not want any dye transfer. Even if this does not remove the stain it will most likely help remove the urine smell in the carpet.

In all cases, the quicker you act the and remove it, the more likely you are to get the Urine Stain out of the carpet.

Remember love you Pets, your kids and yes even your spouse.

  1. you may want to use an over all odor remover. A nice one I have used and I like it because there is no scent to the product is Deodoroc's Get Fresh Carpet Tapis. It is an Odor absorber for carpets mostly. BUT I used it also on my linoleum. You leave it for 1-2 hrs or Over night like I did.
Again wasn't paid for this and I do not work for the company this is an honest usage of the product. I just dislike using heavy scents in my home and I like to smell. SOME common household products on the market are deading our sense of smell by destroying the lining in our noses.
